Amendments to the Health Professions Designation Regulation

Dear Diagnostic and Therapeutic professional representatives,

As a follow-up to our recent correspondence dated December 9, 2016, we are pleased to advise that government has approved amendments to the Health Professions Designation Regulation to create a new umbrella college of diagnostic and therapeutic health professions.

The amendments initially designate four occupations including Clinical Perfusionists, Respiratory Therapists, Radiation Therapists, and Medical Laboratory Technologists as professions under the Health Professions Act in phase one.

Once the new college has been substantially implemented, the Ministry of Health will continue its work on regulatory options for a number of other diagnostic and therapeutic health care occupations, including nuclear medicine technologists, medical radiography technologists, magnetic resonance imaging technologists, medical laboratory assistants, cardiology technologists, diagnostic medical sonographers and medical physicists.

An information bulletin containing additional information is available at the following link: https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2017HLTH0080-001052

The Ministry of Health appreciates the wide range of stakeholders, including members and representatives of diagnostic and therapeutic professions, who participated in providing feedback during the public posting period from December 9, 2016 to March 9, 2017. The majority of stakeholders support the creation of the new college, and the inclusion of the four chosen health professions in phase one. The Ministry of Health also acknowledges the thoughtful suggestions from stakeholders respecting the appropriate regulatory options for the remaining seven health professions, including nuclear medicine technologists, medical radiography technologists, magnetic resonance imaging technologists, medical laboratory assistants, cardiology technologists, diagnostic medical sonographers and medical physicists. The Ministry of Health is committed to continue its work on regulatory options for these health professions in phase two, once the new college has been substantially implemented.

Please forward this email to anyone we may have missed. We look forward to continuing to work with you in relation to phase one (the initial four professions) and in phase two (the remaining seven health professions).

Sincerely,

Professional Regulation and Oversight Branch
