Reporting to the Program Manager or designate and the Respiratory Therapy Professional Practice Leader, the Respiratory Therapy Staff Development Therapist provides clinical guidance in the delivery of respiratory care activities in the Neonatal Care Program. Acts as a clinical resource for respiratory therapists, patients/families and the interdisciplinary team. Assists and supports Respiratory Therapists to deliver quality care for an identified patient population by providing information based on theory/practice, assessing clinical/technical skills. Supports and participates in the direct patient care as appropriate, in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures.

Example of Duties/Accountabilities

  • Identifies individual respiratory therapist’s learning needs and helps to implement appropriate plans to allow therapists to achieve desired level of competency related to knowledge, skills, attitudes and clinical judgements in collaboration with the Respiratory Profession Practice Coordinator (PPC) and Professional Practice Leader (PPL).
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of competency based education/preceptorship pathways/clinical laddering. Strategies used to mentor will include role modelling, coaching, teaching and acting as a clinical resource for respiratory therapists by sharing clinical expertise and providing clinical guidance. Coaches’ respiratory therapists regarding respiratory therapy practice skills by demonstration and explanation and by encouraging novices to take advantage of learning opportunities. Collaborates and participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of interprofessional team education such as simulation, and mock codes.
  • Liaises with the PPC Medical Director(MD), Program Manager(PM) and PPL ,and Neonatal Program Educators in the development and implementation of ongoing and new education needs for staff therapists, medical staff, nursing and other health professionals.
  • Collaborates with the PPL in the development of teaching materials/demonstrations of procedures for classroom and/or clinical bedside instruction.
  • Provides education to respiratory therapists, medical staff, nursing and other health professionals on respiratory therapy related clinical practice, equipment, policies and procedures.


Education, Training and Experience

  • Graduate of an approved school of Respiratory Therapy.
  • Four (4) years’ recent related experience in a Pediatric/Neonatal tertiary care facility including one (1) year of teaching experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Successful completion of Canadian Board of Respiratory Care Examinations.
  • Eligible for registration (RRT) with the British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapists (BCSRT).
  • Eligible for registration with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT)
  • Certified instructor in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Neonatal Resuscitation.
